Itinerary of the Molini and Michele Satta

Route: length about 6 km. Journey time: about 4 hours. Difficulty: The itinerary is quite demanding in the final part due to the difference in height to overcome. Characteristics: like the path n ° 1 for flora and fauna, even if the path is characterized by the presence of historical artifacts. After about 1 Km. From the starting point you will find the Rotone Mill, the oldest and most important in the territory of the Municipality of Castagneto Carducci, which has become so thanks to the presence of numerous springs upstream. Recently the building has been renovated with meticulousness and relevance in all its parts. Higher up are the ruins of the Mulino di Mezzo and the Mulino di Cima. Continuing along the path, in addition to the numerous charcoal pits, you will find two suggestive stone bridges dating back to the middle of the last century where, even today, the aqueduct passes (Ponte di Sotto and Ponte di Sopra). The rest and refreshment area meets after about 1 km from the Ponte di Sopra. Near the ruins of “La Fiora” you can admire the spring called “Bolla del Conte Piero”, after which you will arrive at the crossroads at the end of the route. At this point you can choose the path n ° 1, following it backwards to Castagneto Carducci, the path n ° 3 that leads to San Carlo, or go back following the route just traveled, backwards to Castagneto Carducci. At the end of our excursion, we conclude the visit to the nearby Michele Satta winery for a tasting of some of the greatest Bolgheri Doc wines.

In the afternoon free time to discover the village of Castagneto Carducci and some of the artisanal activities such as the Borsi Liquorificio or the Art and Fashion tailoring. An opportunity to visit Carducci’s places, the small house museum and the archive museum. Dinner in a traditional restaurant in the village based on historical dishes and traditional recipes.

After breakfast at the Relais, departure for Populonia with the environmental guide for an excursion between the Mediterranean scrub and the sea.

Path of the Cavalleggeri and Buca delle Fate

You walk suspended between sky and sea in the dense Mediterranean vegetation overlooking the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. The ancient Via dei Cavalleggeri was guarded by medieval “financiers” on concession by the Papal State to the Pisan Republic to exercise jurisdiction and control over this stretch of coast. In reality, the knights also had an important health function and controlled the territory to prevent infectious diseases such as cholera and typhus from the sea from spreading inland. After a brief stop at the Monastery of San Quirico, we continue our ascent until we reach a panoramic point from where, continuing along the coastal paths, we reach the splendid Buca delle Fate, one of the most beautiful coves and beaches of the coast.
